Although we later got a Nintendo 64, the first console I actually got (as a present) was the GameCube.
And, technically, the first and only console I bought was a Wii U this last Christmas, as a gift for my Fiancée. I was always more of a handheld gamer anyway; since the divorce, I've never stayed at any one place for terribly long. :l

Some of it was money I saved up for a long time, and then some of it was old stuff I sold!
Which, it was my old DS and DSi I never even played anymore and lots of old games I never played anymore (I kept a few, but ended up selling like25 because those were dumb childish games I have like no memories of....most of them ....)
And I'm about to sell my really old outdated tablet to maybe buy another game or something, idk.
I kinda wish I could get a job, but I'm 13.

So I asked your first handheld. Now what was your first console?
Since when you are younger, it's usually like your parents console or you share it with siblings, I'm more flexible on this.
My dad owned the consoles in our house (my parents divorced when I was 7 and I live my mom now tho) so like yeah.
This is actually a harder question for me since I did way more handheld gaming in the day than console gaming.
But technically, my first console would be the PlayStation 2.
I have great memories with the PS2, it was cool.
