Into the Darkness
xXAliveXx (2014-02-10 19:51:46)(Part 2, Plant life)
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was going to work at the Plant? But...I had so many friends who would miss me...there was....well, I had to face the facts. There was no one. No one would miss me if I dissapeared forever. Not even my own parents...but then again, thay was the duty of the parents. They were to accept that thier children will move on someday and never look back, as is the job of the children to never look back.
my mother walks into the room.
"What is it? Are you troubled?" She asked,
"No...no, I just got my life assignment, thats all." I shoved the letter into my back pocket. "Its an...um, respectable job, I suppose."
Mother just nodded and left.
I knew she didnt believe me.
"Well, just remember, in one week you begin work. I hope, for your sake, it IS respectable." She called from the other room.
"Of course...mother, I wouldn't lie to you."
Mother nodded and said no more.

Monday. I carry in my hand a small suitcase with my few belongings, and I stand outside my new job...my new home. The Plant. The foolish children from my childhood werent gossiping...no, everyone who went inside the plant were there to stay. Forever.
I took a deep breath, then entered the building.
I was immediately bound and gagged.
I tried to scream, but something on the rag made me choke.
I passed out onto the cold stone floor.
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."

I wake with a sudden start, like one second my head hit the stone, and the second I'm in this room.
I sit up, with effort, and find that I'm still bound by rope. my hands are behind my back, and I am defensless.
I look around and see that others like me are also sitting up. Some hang their heads, while others franticly search for a way out. I look around, and decide that this place has much more history than I recently thought.
After a while, everyone is awake, and a loud voice comes cutting clean through the sobs of those around me.
"You have all been chosen to either serve as Regenerates or workers at the Plant. I welcome you."
One at a time, the lights pop on, blinding everyone in the room for half a second.
A man dressed in gray addresses us below him on his platform.
"This place is all that you know. You no longer have a outside, nor an inside. The Plant is the Plant to you, and you will never leave." The man smiled, "As far as you know, you were born here, and you will die here."
Someone stood up suddenly, and shouted, "I know what you really do here at the plant!"
The man in gray stopped smiling.
"I know that they aren't killed quickly! You bleed us and leave us for dead!"
"Silence. I will not have you stirring up trouble. In fact, depending on if you have pure blood, you may be the first regenerated." the gray man said.
"I wont be! I have a disease! I inserted itself into me when I found out that I was going to the Plant! You can use my blood now, I'm infected!"
The gray man smiled. "But you, dear sir, were a regenerated baby. I can tell by the way you are so bold, as if you have nothing left to live for, while normal people from natural births always try to survive! Only those with pure blood may enter the machine, yes...and only those with pure blood can survive any disease they come in contact with."
The man who stood let the truth sink in...the disease wouldn't kill him, he would be regenerated. "No..."
"I am Dr.Grey, and you will address me as so." The gray man said.
"And now, everyone line up to be tested for pure blood. You can get it from regenerated parents or being a regenerate your self."
He stepped away from the edge of his platform.
"Then , you will enter the machine."
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."

My city.
it was not named after me, it was not built in my honor, and yet it will always be my city.
My family.
They never supported me, and they never told me the truth, and yet they will always be my family.
My death.
I wasnt alone, the death count was many, and I didnt literally die, and yet, something inside me broke that day. Something
that I can never get back.
But I will always try.
part one
City of darkness
I watch the children on the streets below. I recite to myself which ones will be regenerated. Little Joe, Sally, Richard, and Gall. All four, born for the sole purpose of being regenerated. I still miss Carly. She was the one child I let myself get close to, but she was dragged away, into the machine that...regenerates them. All I had of her was a piece of cloth that ripped from her dress on that day. It flittered innocently through the wind and landed on my arm. Now even that is gone, ripped from me by my mother during spring cleaning.
I never allowed myself to get close to those who would be regenerated again. Morher says that by being antisocial, I was setting myself up to go work at the Plant. But I tried to be social, and I was cast away by the groups of popular rich girls and snotty boys who turn thier nose up at my rags.
"Best not to associate ourselves with someone who will wind up working in the Plant," they would say.
"Plant workers aren't allowed out, ever. They're contaminated."
One day, on my 15th birthday, when everyone got thier Life Assignments, I came home to find an envelope adressed to me. This was it. I knewdI'd never work at the plant, I wasnt that kind of person.
I opened the envelope and took out a crisp piece of paper that seemed alive with possibility.
It said, "with all due respect, you shall work at the Plant. Regeneration is a gift, and you will help us achieve it."
