St Louis, 1967. A figure hung in the middle of the hotel room. He was gently swaying back and forth on the noose. Blood leaked from his neck, ran down his body, and onto the floor, forming a puddle of crimson. It was obvious it didn't take long for the man to die by hanging. I quickly searched for evidence, but found none. No suicide note, footprints, or anything that could give me a clue as to what happened.
He had been a wanted man for a while. He'd evaded the athorities for years. He had access to the craftiest of disguises, loyalist of allies, and enough connections to be almost untouchable. It was obvious after a bit of thinking this was no suicide. I knew who he was, but I couldn't make out the face. It was horribly mangled, as if someone had stuck his face into an industrial fan. A bloody Colt .45 dangled from his finger limply, by the trigger, I might add. An arm was missing, and he had been disembowled. It was a grisly sight.
The hotel had been emptied so I could search for evidence. I knew nobody was in there but me and that bloody corpse, but I still had an uneasy feeling. Like... I was being stalked. I hated the feeling. I slowly paced around the room, and I heard footsteps that mirrored mine exactly.
"Who's... there?" I called out nervously. "You're not supposed to be in here. This is a private investigation." I heard a voice that sent chills down my spine.
"You meddling men never learn." I spun around. "WHO ARE YOU!!?" A man with a mask stepped from the shadows and chuckled. "That man, was merely a... 'friend' of mine who was willing to take the blame for my crimes, in exchange for some of my 'earnings'. One day, the little bastard refused to cooperate with my policies. To keep him quiet, well, you know. Now I'll have to hire a new goon to take his place."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "You're a madman. A madman! A fraud! Thief! Murderer! The public won't believe a story like this!" The man frowned. "About that... I prefer to do my work unnoticed. I like you. I'd sit here and spill my life story to you, but I need to keep up my reputation." He draws a knife and approaches. "So naive. So questionable. So curious. I won't stand for it."
I grab the guy's arm and throw him to the floor, right under the hanging body. The Colt .45 goes off and blows the guy's eye out. He yells unintelligible words and pulls me down. "You- you
I stare in shock for a second and silently take my leave. I suppose I should reveal this plot to the public... but... well, some things are better left unsaid.
