Finn was a normal 13 year old boy. Unfortunately, he was a bit of an outcast. He didn't have any friends. He found solace only in his bulldog, Jake. He didn't have much of a family. Most of his relatives had died by various illnesses. His single mother more or less ignored him. Because of this, Finn developed rather antisocial behavior. He never really talked to anyone, besides Jake. He would often spend hours holed up in his room, watching TV, playing video games, reading, and dreaming about the adventures he may one day have. When he wasn't inside, Finn would go to the most desolate places around town with Jake, pretending he was on miraculous adventures.
Three weeks into the summer, Jake had died of old age, leaving Finn devastated and depressed. He didn't go around town. He didn't go outside. He didn't even entertain himself in the slightest. He'd simply lie down in bed all day, lamenting Jake's departure.
Finn decided one day he'd had enough. "I need to leave. Then I can adventure forever." While his mom was sleeping, he went to the medicine cabinet. He pulled out a bottle of aspirin. "Here goes nothing..." Finn dumps a fistful into his mouth. He sits on the floor and waits. After a while, he feels a numbing sensation all over. He passes out, rather than dying.
His mother finds him unconscious on the bathroom floor the next morning, a bottle of aspirin on the floor next to him. She immediately rushes Finn to the hospital. After extensive testing, it is revealed Finn is in a coma, possibly one he may never wake up from. As for the adventures you see on the show? This is merely Finn's own imagination.
In Finn's world, he is the hero. Jake is his loyal magical sidekick. He rescues the many princesses of the magical land of Ooo. With each adventure and new face he meets, Finn falls only deeper into his coma. And why should he wake up? After all, he is in a perfect world. A world that is his own.
