So, there's a lot of Mother (Earthbound) fans out there, and I'm certain several regularly visit this site. Today, I was thinking about something that's been on my mind, and admittedly, I'm grasping at straws here, but I have a loose theory about the immediate future of the series.
The second title released as Earthbound on the Wii U Virtual Console recently enough. The first title, officially translated in English for the first time, was released as 'Earthbound Beginnings' just weeks ago, shocked and amazed everyone, fans and otherwise.
The Good:
Mother 3 will be released on the Wii U, likely by the end of this year, or by the Summer of next. Nintendo won't want it to interfere, saleswise, with The Legend Of Zelda: Anime Skyrim, so it's probably going to release at least a month or two earlier, giving a chance for the hype to fade a bit. In keeping with the titles thus far, it will likely be titled...
The Bad:
...'Earthbound Revelations.'
Does that mean it will be the last in the series, ever? No, in fact, I actually would put money on the fact that, if a new Earthbound game isn't released by the end of the Wii U life cycle, it will be released within the first two years of the NX. I'm also willing to wager that, while they'll definitely scrap the 20-year-old graphics, it will likely by a fully-rendered game using the same isometric viewpoint Earthbound has always had.
Unfortunately, as I warned you, this is only an educated guess, at best, and while my theory does have some substance to it, don't take my word for it until a written statement comes from the Big N, and even then, I wouldn't trust that until the game is actually in your console, being played by you (delays and cancellations do happen, after all).
What do you guys think the next step for the series is?
