Actually, he was important in 4 games (SA2, Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog and 2006. The last two of them are awful games). All of his other appearances were in spin-offs and minor roles (Generations).
Tails and Eggman appear in every game and Knuckles appears very often. Heck, Amy Rose is more important than CRAWLINGGGG IN MY SKINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN the Hedgehog.
