XxFuzzballxX (2014-08-08 05:09:56)As far as I've experienced, the 3ds was really innovative. Its thin, lightweight, has cool games, feels comfy in the hands, and the large top screen makes me feel like they took the screen of a dsixl systems and put it into a smaller device.
The only experience I really had with the 3ds was because I took my little brother's a few times just to see if I would like it or not. Surprisingly, I did, and now the 3ds xl is going at the top of my Christmas list. Its kinda sad I'm older than him and he has a newer handheld gaming device than I do, and mine doesn't even work! I have a dsixl and even though it has big screens, I don't like it now as much as I used to. Good thing its been a few years since I got it. Time for an upgrade!

The more buttons were usually keypads which were used to work as directional buttons in some games. (Why not just a joystick?)

Yeah, those are keypads used to
Having way too much buttons is not good.

pikarceus (2014-08-09 20:50:16)Innovation is cool, but imo perfecting it is actually better. People may call it "stealing" or whatever but the Dualshock 4 is far superior to any recent Nintendo made controller even though Nintendo originally came up with triggers and shoulder buttons...
Anyway, innovation for the sake of innovation is kinda "eh" I mean look at the X1 all the stuff they tried to do with Kinect and the multitasking feature, arguably innovative but no one really cares.
Truth be told, I can't think of anything in the past few years on the level of the examples given in this thread, it's mostly been minor improvements these past few years. Controller designs haven't radically changed since the PS2, it's mostly been squeezing out more detail in the graphics and making more intricate online experiences.
All time probably would be the NES/SNES or the PS1.

Yeah, didn't mention the 6-button controller, but it was a separate purchase. The SNES controller was there since day 1. But it was better due to closer resemblance to arcade.
And adding more buttons was revolutionary. Even before the SNES still used A and B buttons, and sometimes, a C button. The SNES pretty much made it standard for modern controllers. (Yet again, they go back to A and B buttons only again with N64.
