Story:
Don't worry, there are no spoilers!
In the past, Sonic is making his rounds through Green Hill Zone, when suddenly, a mysterious shadowy figure appears, and sucks him and Tails into a vortex! Where could they have gone?
Meanwhile, in the present, Sonic is a little early for his surprise birthday party. While he and Tails wait for their friends to show up, the same shadowy figure appears, and sucks them in, too!
Sonic winds up in a colorless world, and sees a slightly familiar-looking place up ahead. He decides to investigate...
Which begins the amazing adventure that spans two generations!
Controls:
The controls are mostly the same as the other Sonic DS titles: A/B to Jump/Homing Attack (Classic Sonic must unlock this ability), Y to Boost (Modern Sonic only), Down+A/B in midair to stomp (Modern Sonic only, must be unlocked), and Down+A/B on the ground to Spin Dash (Classic Sonic) or Slide (Modern Sonic).
Graphics:
The graphics are absolutely wonderful, even without the 3D turned on. The 3D visual effects make Classic Sonic's return all the more special, with his potbellied character popped into a 3D character. Modern Sonic's graphics are still as great as ever, and are always a great experience.
Gameplay:
Classic Sonic (Act 1):
Older fans will recognize the classic gameplay they used to know and love. Act 1 involves more platforming than speed. You will be using A/B to jump a lot here. If you like the original Sonic games, you'll love these segments.
Modern Sonic (Act 2):
Here's my interpretation of Modern Sonic's speed-driven segments:

Yeah, it's pretty much that: Simply hold down the Left Control Pad button and use Y to Boost, and you'll get through most of the level. The occasional Homing Attack will be needed as well. Newer Sonic fans will recognize this gameplay.
Special Stages:
These are immediately unlocked after beating Acts 1 and 2 for each stage. You'll be able to collect the Chaos Emerald for the area in this stage. It's a little sad that Sega has been constantly making it easier to gain the Chaos Emeralds ever since Sonic Advance.
Bosses:
Bosses in this game are found at Boss Gates that pop up after a few areas are conquered. Fans young and old will smile when they see the bosses that have been taken from the history of the Sonic series. However, there are two bosses for each Boss Gate (excluding the Final Gate). This would normally be good, but there are only three Boss Gates other than the Final Gate. Also, you must collect all of the Chaos Emeralds in order to face the final boss at the Final Gate, which takes the fun out of gaining the Emeralds, which previously unlocked an Extra Boss ever since Sonic Advance.
-You can also unlock Missions, which allow you to recieve bonuses such as figurines, music from previous Sonic games, and artwork from previous games. However, some of these missions seem extremely challenging compared to the actual levels. This would normally be good, but most of them seem a little too challenging, and border on "cheap and shoddy".
Content:
As you can tell from the Gameplay section, there's a whole lot of content. However, very few Missions are made available automatically; the rest you must purchase with Play Coins. That's pretty darn expensive, considering they're 5 Play Coins apiece and there are 100 missions. The missions must be unlocked after progressing through the game, and must then be purchased. Pretty expensive for lousy missions, right?
Online Play:
Sheesh. I haven't played it much, but from what I've seen, the Online VS. Mode is filled with people who have played every single Sonic game and have perfected every single run through each stage. When you race against a player online, their Online Card is registered in a special section. I saw one person had S-rank on every stage except one.
Overall:
The lousy-yet-expensive missions shouldn't stop you from getting this game unless you really want that unlockable content. The rest of the game is pretty good. The cutscenes advance what the two Sonic Rush games and the DS version of Sonic Colors did, and have dialogue with 3D character models that move instead of flat drawings. However, the mouths still don't move. Anyway, overall, this game is pretty good, if you don't mind the flaws.
Controls: 9/10
Graphics: 10/10
Gameplay: 7.5/10
Content: 7/10
Overall: 8/10
FINAL GRADE: 7.5/10

Cool, I also plan to review this one once I beat it. But to be honest five playcoins per mission isn't bad. In Shinobi, each bonus mission costs 20 playcoins. O.o
And no mention of the online play?
Dragnet (2012-01-10 02:05:13)
Gee, 20 sounds much worse than 5. But the missions are still pretty annoying.

Sorry, I'll add the online play section now.

Frickin' size limit!
That's all I can add. Sorry.

@Zoomer-well.....YEAH!

Bumped. The 3DS General section is becoming more and more like the Miscellaneous section (in size and overall usage, that is) every day...

Yep. It's cause more people with 3DS's are joining 3DSplaza. A lot of the active forum posters here now weren't here when the forums started. And I do mean A LOT.
Dragnet (2012-01-10 22:23:52)
Well, at least the topic wasn't completely buried in only less than 24 hours.

One of my threads was drowned in less than 12 hours.

@shinyzoroark-don't worry, I got about 10 planned, and after my birthday in May, that number will go up even more.

Bumped again.

Puppy caused my topic to be bumped down again...

Well, I've decided (mostly because no one is online right now) to send a link to this review to Rob.
